The Beach

About 4 blocks from the house is a popular beach with turquoise water, great sunsets, little shade and possibly the best bodysurfing and boogieboarding on the Big Island. Facilities include restrooms, showers, picnic tables, a volleyball court, and lifeguards on duty. It is also home to Magics bar and grill, which is a popular place to watch the action over food and drinks.

“Magic Sands” beach (also called White Sands and, officially, Laʻaloa Beach) gets its name from the sand which periodically comes and goes, magically vanishing or re-appearing, sometimes overnight.

When the soft white sand is in, it’s very comfortable and easy on the feet, and a great spot for sunbathing, boogie boarding, body surfing, swimming and snorkeling. A fair warning to novice wave riders: the waves here are usually powerful – often in a fun way, but sometimes enough to slam you into the sand (the south side of the bay has fewer rocks).

We swim here year round, but when the rocks are exposed the beach becomes too treacherous for most swimmers. The sand will soon “magically” return, transforming the shore back into its former beachy self. Use caution when entering and exiting the water during times when the rocks are not covered in sand. Never turn your back to the surf as large waves can be unpredictable and powerful. Lifeguards will not allow surfboards or larger watercraft out at Magic Sands Beach for safety reasons.
